I am passionately in love with natures tales and truths that supersede me and my little life. Somehow being aware of my insignificance in the grander scheme of it all returns significance to me. Reminders of the essentials and non negotiables. The important stuff. Just like giving too much significance to self and the smaller things returns insignificance to everything. I love a good paradox.
The table cloth is a local reference to a recurring cloud formation over Table Mountain in Cape Town, one of natures 7 world wonders. The strong winds carry the moist air up the mountian where it loses temparture and condenses into a rushing mist. Travelling to the other side its temperature rises again and evaporates into thin air. Standing amongst it is both magical and frightning, turning a familiar feeling of blur and uncertainty into something physically immersive. From a distance however it takes the shape of a cloth being draped over a table as it hydrates and nourishes the mountain plateau, hindering it to turn into desert wasteland. This interplay of mountain and sea is what keeps this resilient biotope nourished and alive. Much like intentional gathering and relationships keep us nourished in times that are scarce in visibility and confidence.
And so, in the spirit of art and the name of nature we hosted a dinner. Team @van.hofen served a custom made 5 course meal with ingredients, textures and taste that mirrored this interplay of mountain and sea as I got to drape the space with a selection of paintings and this table installation for @bluelobster.art to bring about the community.
I still dream about the whimsical desert of fairy floss and Roobois Ice cream.
