CERAMICS
My sculptures are born from a fascination with the resilience of the South African national flower ‘King Protea’, aiming to capture her essence in a moment of transformation. This flower belongs to the Pyrophyte plants that have managed to enter a fruitful symbiosis with the element of fire and therefore literally rise from the ashes into a new life cycle.
The clay works enter a metamorphosis as they emerge from the firing process with a new materiality and identity. The leather woven around the vessels communicates a sense of dominance and sensual power, herby uniting the gentle, innocent beauty of the flower with the all consuming force of nature.
